2011-02-01

Mite majors continue winning ways...

The Northstar Mite Majors have had a strong January and solidified their positon near the top of the Mass Selects league. The team scored 20 goals in three games against South Shore Dynamoes, Manchester Flames, and GBL Jr. Bruins.

On January, 9th, the Northstars hosted the South Shore Dynamoes. From the first drop of the puck, the Northstars took the play to the Dynamoes. Colin Hedvig opened the scoring in the first period on a nice pass from Dominic Leone. This was quickly followed by a goal by Drew Alberston, with an assist from Rohan Herur, that gave the Northstars a 2-0 lead. The second period saw more of the same. Goals by Aidan Cornwell, Colin Wenrich, and Kyle Rogers gave the Northstars an unsurmountable 5-0 lead after two periods. Dominic Leone, Nathan Terski, and Kyle Caroll assisted on the goals. The third period found Aidan Cornwall and Drew Alberston netting their second goals of the game and Kyle Caroll geting the 8th goal to make the final 8-1. Tim Fitzpatrick and Joey Gow played strong defense and Nicholas Werner turned away several shots to earn his 6th victory of the year.

On January 23rd, the Manchester Flames came calling. Very similar to last game, the Northstars took the action to Manchester from the start of the game. 18 seconds into the game, Aidan Cornwell took a pass from Kyle Rogers and buried it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Colin Wenrich added a second goal 3 minutes later. Still in the first, Aidan Cornwell continued his hot streak and scored his second goal of the game. Not to be outdone, Colin Wenrich took a pass from Dominic Leone and Drew Alberston and put it where his mama puts the peanut butter (top shelf) for his second goal. This gave the Northstars 4-0 lead. Kyle Rogers scored in the second with Coin Wenrich and Nathan Terski assiting. In the third, Nathan Terski took a solid pass from Aidan Cornwell and Kyle Caroll, blasting it past the Flames goalie for the 6th and final goal of the game. The Northstars won 6-2 and moved themselves up to 4th place ahead of GBL Jr. Bruins for the final playoff spot. Joey Gow played solid in net, earning his first victory of the year in relief of Nicholas Werner.

On January 30th, the showdown between the GBL Jr. Bruins and Northstars did not disappoint. The Northstars went into Boston riding a two game win streak. The GBL Bruins took an early 1-0 lead 3 minutes into the game. This was answered with authority by the Norhstars as they went on to score 4 first period goals. Colin Wenrich took a pass from PJ Gray and beat the Jr Bruins net minder to net the game at 1-1. Shortly after, Aidan Cornwell scored with an assist from Nathan Terski. 11 seconds later, Nathan Terski scored on a feed from Aidan Cornwell and Kyle Caroll. Kyle Rogers put the finishing touch on the first period with a top shelf goal. Colin Wenrich assisted ont the play. However, the GBL Jr. Bruins were tough and did not give up, netting two goals in the second to make the score 4-3 heading into the third period. The Northstars opened a 5-3 lead on Nathan Terski's second goal of the game at the 10 minute mark of the third period. This was answered by the Jf. Bruins with 7 minutes left to make it 5-4. Nathan Terski completed his Hat Trick by scoring with 4:50 left on a tough angle shot. Things looked good at that point. However, as the old saying goes, it isn't over until it's over. The GBL Bruins continued to press the play and pulled their goalie with 2 minutes left to play. With a 6 on 4 situation due to a penalty, the Jr. Bruins were able to net 2 goals to tie the game at 6-6, which is how the game ended. The tie keeps the Northstars 2 points ahead of GBL for 4th place and the final playoff spot.

The Northstars are off this week. They are back in action Feb. 13th against the Outlaws as NESC.
